It separates the Lake IJssel from the Wadden Sea. Fish can pass the Afsluitdijk only via the sluices at Den Oever and Kornwerderzand. Because of the high current in the sluices, at the moment only large species succeed in upstream migration. In order to improve the passability for fish, a socalled “Vismigratierivier” (Dutch for “river for fish migration”) is going to be constructed.
