The Afsluitdijk is a causeway in the Netherlands. It separates the Lake IJssel from the Wadden Sea. Fish can pass the Afsluitdijk only via the sluices at Den Oever and Kornwerderzand. Because of the high current in the sluices, at the moment only large species succeed in upstream migration. In order to improve the passability for fish, a socalled “Vismigratierivier” (Dutch for “river for fish migration”) is going to be constructed. The technical challenge is to open the dike for fish, and to keep the salt water out of the lake IJssel at the same time.
